It's not always "a buncha greedy thugs"


With the NBA strike/lock-out going on day #130-something and it looking like there is not going to be a season for NBA fans...I wanted to post a link to an article that really shows heart and love for community.  As folks that know meare aware,  I've been a fan of the Orlando Magic for many years.  (Of course, I also love catching Memphis Grizzlies' games, and have become a supporter of our Memphis NBA team)

If you have a second, check out this article.  I felt good that some guys care about their community and fans, and are not just "greedy thugs" as I have read in some online comments about this whole NBA negotiation.

Meanwhile...I'll be getting ready for the next NFL weekend and upcoming college hoops!!!

New Look For Your Rear-View Mirror!


If you see one of these cars in Tupelo, don't do like I did, and assume "oh, must be someone from out of town coming in to attend the Police Academy here."  Nope--Tupelo Police cars (the new ones) have a new look to `em.  I gotta say, I like the classic, traditional black and white, teamed with the blue lettering and the modern look of the car body + spiffy light bar.

Huge Milestone


Now that the 10th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11 has passed, we can look back at how our world has changed from that moment.  If you have flown on a plane in the past 10 years, you notice a difference from 11 years ago, obviously.  As I heard stated on an interview over the weekend--now we are more apt to call authorities if we see a briefcase left at a table in the mall, or a van left parked on a sidewalk next to a government or high-population building.  Basically, we now realize "it can happen."  Too bad that it takes something like the attacks to pump our sense of country...our sense of patriotism.  I hated to see it take only days before one political party or another had supporters finding ways to blame the other.  The anniversary banded many Americans back together, even if only for a short time.  Although sad, and while recognizing the anniversary of a horrible event, it was a good feeling to have mostly everyone "on the same team" again for a day or so, anyway.

If you feel like doing something to honor the vicitms of the attacks, a website has been set up with info on volunteering and supporting a cause, along with tribute posting and more.  The website is www.911day.org.

I don't post many funny signs...


mainly, because this day it's hard to tell what is real and what is not on the internet...but, this sign got me laughing.  Yes, yes...I know that most senior are on, say, a fixed income, and the discounts are helpful...I totally SUPPORT senior discounts.  But, this sign still made me laugh.  So, I share!

HOUSE has it right!


I make sure to DVR every new episode of House on WLOV.  Love the show, and love he way Hugh Laurie makes the grouchy (yet lovable) Dr. House come to life. And, being a nerd, I also love the American accent he pulls off.  I wonder how often they have to do re-takes because he lets his British accent through.  Nonetheless, he's a big music guy, and, now has a special coming up.  In the interview, he speaks about radio, and a point I think is rather important.  Just beause I'm IN RADIO doesn't mean I think it's the one and only thing on the planet for entertainment, but, Hugh makes a good point--especially for those of us that eventually get tired of never hearing anything different or new.  Check out the entire article by clicking here!

Made a difference today?


As you may have heard, Tornado Relief 2011 is wrapping up.  The effort has been a success, as several local media outlets joined to work together for one common goal: to help people in our area recover from the recent devastating tornadoes.  It all got rolling a week before the big "thon" (since radio, newspaper and television were all joined together, I've never been comfortable using the words "telethon" or "radiothon" so, I've just called it a "thon"...yep, I'm a nerd, as my wife reminds me often) with everyone pushing the information out so as many people as we could reach would be aware.  The original goal was $10,000, and we reached almost 50% of that before the "thon" ever started, thanks to donations online with the uber-cool web widget devised by a very, very sharp person with the Daily Journal.  At this point, everyone thought that maybe $10k was a smaller goal than what we should shoot for...so, a majority voted for a new goal of $50,000.  Now, I gotta be honest, it sorta took a little wind out of my lungs when I thought about such a huge jump, kicking the goal up by such a high percentage.  However, several folks that have done this type of thing many times suggested it, and, I'd trust them a lot more than myself!  So, $50,000 it was.  On the day of the "thon" all involved joined at the Mall @ Barnes Crossing for the two-hour televised event.  Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama people came through (if I skipped anyone's region, my apologies--I don't have a total breakdown of where all donations came from) and the goal was hit!!!  Thank you yet again to everyone that made it happen!  Large and small donations alike all go together in reaching the goal!  After the event was over, to my understanding, some of the members got together and came up with the idea that "if we can do this well in two-hours (plus the pre-promotion) imagine what we could do in the long(er) term!"  So, it was decided that the effort would continue on for roughly a month, and the goal was doubled.  Not in a greedy sense...I mean, how can you be deemed "greedy" if you are trying to raise money to HELP our neighbors in need?!  Well, things are now wrapping up on the drive, and, just speaking for myself--goal or no goal, there is still a need.  This disaster didn't just cover Smithville or another single community, it affected SEVERAL communities, and our drive to help was designed to HELP those many communities.  Not just one area, or one organization, but many.  I thought one of the greatest parts of this effort was the ability to choose to either designate where your donation went, or allow it to go where the largest need was at the time of disbursement.  This is still an option, and you still have time to help.  Be a part of something bigger than you, me, or our radio station.  Be a part of a group that wants to help, and knows there are others that truly need that help.  You can still donate by bouncing over to this part of our site or going directly to the CREATE donation page.  Either way, you can select "OTHER" and then designate an area ("Smithville", "Chickasaw County", etc) or organization ("Red Cross", etc) in the Special Instructions field.  Or, if you leave the Special Instructions box empty, your donation will go to the area where it is most needed.

This is one last chance to help our area.  It is sometimes hard for those of us that still have a home, all of our belongings, and safe family to understand what it's like to be hit so sudden and so hard.  But, we all have the capability to try...and the ability to help.

I got in my car a couple of mornings ago, and my odometer crossed over into all 1's.  A milestone that means nothing, but I thought it was kinda cool.

March showers bring...wait...


If we are supposed to have April showers after the past couple of weeks...I'm dreading it.  Not being a big fan of rain, I've started getting cabin fever, so if you see me dancing around in the rain, you know I had enough of being stuck inside!

Researchers in Hamilton, Canada have determined, by lengthy studies on mice, that regular exercise is good for the heart.  Wow, so glad those were not our tax dollars so well spent....

Charlie Sheen-Maybe Major League knew something with the "Wild Thing" label...


Charlie Sheen is off work from "Two and a Half Men" but still making jokes, including about when his top-rated sitcom might resume production.  The CBS series went on hiatus last month after Sheen was briefly hospitalized following a 911 call in which a neighbor said the actor was intoxicated and in pain.

In an interview on "The Dan Patrick Show,"  Sheen said he was prepared to get back on the set but those in charge of the series weren't.  "They said, `You get ready and we'll get ready.' And I got ready and went back and nobody's there," he said. "I'm here and I'm ready. They're not. Bring it, you know?"

Sheen said he tends to "unravel pretty quickly," so suggested producers should put him to work now.  Asked about when shooting would resume, he joked, "I believe August of 2014 at this pace. I don't know, it's supposed to be like the 28th or the 29th. That's what it is! It's the 29th in a non-leap year."

A spokesman for Sheen said previously he hoped to return to work by the end of February.

CBS and producer Warner Bros. Television declined comment on when production might resume on the Monday night sitcom that has filmed only 16 of the season's planned 24 episodes. The network and studio have expressed concern for the actor's well-being.

In the interview, Sheen acknowledged that he's had "some problems lately" and said staying away from crack cocaine is good advice unless a person can "manage it socially."  Asked if he could, Sheen replied, "Yeah, yeah, but that kinda blew up in my face ... like an exploding crack pipe."

He said he is sober now.
